Armstrong stepped on the moon July 20, 1969 at 10:57 pm EDT, as millions of people watched on live television.
Apollo 11 was launched from Pad 39A on the north end of Merritt Island (originally known as Merritt Island Launch Area - MILA - later changed to Kennedy Space Center). This picture was made in my home on the southern tip of Merritt Island, approximately 24 miles from the launch site, with a 4x5 Crown Graphic and black and white Polaroid film.
I grew up in the newspaper business and have been taking pictures my entire life - look at the profile photo: We used that on our Christmas Card in 1940 when I was just 6 weeks old. In 1965 I moved to Brevard County, Florida, to work as a newspaper reporter. It was an exciting time, and for a brief time between newspaper jobs I worked at Cape Canaveral as a darkroom technician on the last part of the Gemini program. My newspaper jobs were as a reporter, so I had the freedom to experiment with pictures, and I didn't have to worry if my experiments failed.
