The rocket was photographed from the press site about a mile from the launch pad, with a Pentax 35mm camera and a borrowed 500mm mirror lens.
I took the pictures of the moon about 2 weeks earlier with a friend's backyard telescope. I marked the film so I could reload it later, then made exposures of the moon on every 3rd frame.
On launch day, first 2 frames were pictures of the rocket lifting off the pad. The remaining exposures alternated between the Apollo 11 rocket by itself, and the rocket superimposed on an image of the moon.
I grew up in the newspaper business and have been taking pictures my entire life - look at the profile photo: We used that on our Christmas Card in 1940 when I was just 6 weeks old. In 1965 I moved to Brevard County, Florida, to work as a newspaper reporter. It was an exciting time, and for a brief time between newspaper jobs I worked at Cape Canaveral as a darkroom technician on the last part of the Gemini program. My newspaper jobs were as a reporter, so I had the freedom to experiment with pictures, and I didn't have to worry if my experiments failed.
